Hello!
Welcome to our twelfth newsletter

It's Christmas in under a month! Where has the year gone? We didn't quite make it every fortnight with the newsletter but very nearly! November was a really busy month for us at thisisvalencia.com - working on an exciting new project which we will tell you much more about very early in the new year.

As usual there is a huge amount happening in the city this month, details are being sent to us very slowly as per! But what we have is here, now for you.

Valencia is mad about the Circus, the more the merrier! This year there are no less than six in town for Christmas, including a very short stay by Cirque Du Soleil - details are here.

There's an exhibition of the growth of Valencia in the last 25 years beginning in front of El Corte Inglés at Nuevo Centro entitled 'Todo un Siglo Por Delante'

The great Sorolla exhibition, which is a must see, but very heavily booked is on at the Bancaja Centre Cultural

Lots of excellent live music, classical, opera and rock.

It's Christmas in Valencia and the circus is in town. Actually there are no less than five circuses in town!

Three are the traditional style with animals, clowns, jugglers and high wire performers.

Gran Circo Wonderland at Plaza de Toros promises a brand new show with 6 Siberian tigers, twelve acrobatic cyclists, exotic animals, clowns and other wonders. Now until January - tickets from 6-42 euros

Circo Americano is a three ring circus and is offering a show full of surprises and excitement with acts from all over the world. It's home is next to the El Saler Shopping centre from now until 6 january and tickets are between 8 and 45 euros

Gran Circo Mundial present Voyage to Infinity - with everything from performing sealions to breakdance and underwater ballet - you can find this circus by the Alameda near the Calatrava Bridge from 06 December and tickets are 10-45 euros

Cirque du Soleil are in town for only four nights at Feria Valencia, with their new show Delirium. No animals, just humans and spectacular entertainment and music - 13-16 December inclusive and prices between 41.50 and 75 euros

Circo Gran Fele has been described as a smaller Cirque du Soleil, Their new show Samsara starts on 15 December in the Jardines de Viveros

So there you have it, as much fun at the circus as you could possibly want!

Oh, and if funfairs are your thing, then head on down to Malvarrosa, the huge annual Christmas funfair has moved there for this year.

Christmas Shopping
The bigger stores and shopping centres have special Sunday and festival openings throughout December. They will have their special openings on 02, 08, 16 and 23 December. They will also open on the 13 January.

Motor Show
the Valencia Motor show is on at the Feria de Valencia from the 05-09 December - see next years models now!

Dog Show
The 28th National Dog show takes place on the 15-16 December at the Feria.

Expo Jove
This huge fair, aimed at children and young people is a must, There are hundreds of attractions each year at this excellent fair. Workshops on dance, theatre, pyrotechnics (of course!). Go Karting and sports, computer games - it is a great day out for all the family. Tickets are only 4 euros for the day. 26 December to 04 January at the Feria de Valencia

A Century Ahead
Todo un Siglo Delante is an exhibition celebrating the last 25 years in Valencia and looking ahead to the future - it is on in the Square in front of the Nuevo Centro shopping Centre.

Christmas Decorations
The Christmas lights in the Plaza Ayuntamiento are always good to see, we love the way they decorate the tall palm trees and outline the Town Hall. The Mercado de Colón is also usually very beautifully decorated and there are regular concerts in there over the next few weeks. Look out for the Beléns (Nativity scenes) all over town, there is usually a huge one at Nuevo Centro - but the 'century ahead' exhibition seems to be there in its place this year. Check thisisvalencia.com later in the week for more on this.

Sorolla
One of Valencia's most famous sons was Joaquin Sorolla. A revered artist throughout the world, one of his last great works was for the Hispanic Society of Americain New York a series of large canvasses depicting life in Spain, This commission filled his last years and by his own admission 'exhausted' him, He completed all but one of the canvasses and returned to his home in Madrid, where he died a year later in 1920, whilst painting a portrait in his garden. This huge series of paintings has been flown over along with many other of his works to mark the complete refurbishment of the Bancaja Cultural Centre in Plaza Tetuan for what is said to be the largest exhibition of his works. The exhibition is proving to be a huge success and though it is free admission you have to book your place to visit. It is already fully booked until the end of January but they are opening the bookings again on Monday 03 December

The Great flood of Valencia 1957.MUVIM
50 years ago, on the 12th October, after a 'gota fria' (a rainfall so fierce it is known as the 'cold drop') The Rio Turia, which for most of the year was little more than a stream, broke its banks, flooding the city and causing untold damage and an unknown number of deaths.

It changed the face of Valencia, and its story is told at two exhibitions, one at MUVIM, c/ Quevedo, 10. and the other at the Almudin behind Plaza de la Virgen. Fascinating Stuff, particularly when you think that the rains we had this year on almost the anniversary of the flood were heavier than those of that year. The new river is obviously working!

Saturday Mass in English
The beautiful Church of San Juan de La Hospital is well worth a visit. It is said to be the oldest church in Valencia, founded in 1238 by The Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem on land donated by King James I.It has been beautifully restored by Opus Dei and has a fascinating museum attached.

Every Saturday they hold a choral mass in English, which is a very international affair and is the only Catholic service held in English in the city

If you are not Catholic and would like to go to an English Sunday Service, then the International Church of Valencia may be just what you are looking for. 11.00 am every Sunday, It is at C/ Guardia Civil 23, 46020 Valencia.

Culture and Beer - They go hand in hand!
Billed as the cultural event of the year (possibly).
Come along to the Sherlock Holmes Pub in Plaza Manises at 6.30pm on the 16th of December for readings from his highly unsuccessful book, English Beauty by Bob Yareham, Listen to the fine guitar of penniless Patagonian 'Mono' Leon and look at Signed Limited Edition Prints by Tim Birch around the walls. The Book and the Prints are for sale with 10% of all proceeds going to Médicos sin Fronteras, so you might just be able to buy some Christmas presents for unpopular relatives and help a worthwhile charity into the bargain!
