El Kiosco

In this tiny plaza, just behind the famous La Lonja (the world heritage building that was once the silk exchange), is this small, slightly grotty bar that probably serves the best Spanish food in El Carmen. The lunch menu will set you back a ridiculous €9 euros, with wine! *

La Diabla

This interesting little bistro, set on one of the busiest little roads in the old town, serves central market fresh, Mediterranean with a twist. The lunchtime menu costs around €8.50 and the night time menu €12, drink not included. We absolutely ADORE the fried green tomatoes! *

Here's a real find, in the square behind the Central Market, a smart and attractive restaurant serving authentic Indian food. It is also a cocktail bar at night and is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. At lunchtime they offer a selection of Thalis, little dishes served on a tray with bread and a poppadum. A great and very tasty way of sampling the menu for 14€ a head. **

This restaurant has gained quite a reputation in Valencia over the last couple of years, Mediterranean with a touch of the Orient, the ambience is relaxed but smart and the service is impeccable. Not cheap, but definitely worth the money. The lunch menu will set you back €20 and the evening menu de degustación around €45. It attracts a über cool crowd, amongst the creme de le creme and is situated just behind the stunning Plaza de la virgen. ***

Not only does the owner own this amazing joint, he is also the owner of the coolest and most cult clubs in Valencia (Le club and Le club du pop - see club listings). Pay around €45 for the menu de desgustacion and let the chefs choose what you are going to eat. And alternative and interesting way of eating out. ***

Inside the IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno), Valencias famous modern art museum, is this elegant and modern restaurant that serves Spanish with a twist, and has an amazing wine list. One Michelin Star Eat inside in winter and eat outside amongst huge modern art pieces during the warmer months. Be prepared to pay around €60 - €80 per person. Well worth the price. ****

Chust Godoy

Beautifully served and delicious Spanish and Valencian food served in rustic/modern, comfortable surroundings. The menu de desgustacion will set you back around €50 euros ahead. ****

San Nicolas

This family restaurant, founded in 1983 and still going strong, specializes in market fresh fish and rice dishes. It is small but cosy and the staff are friendly and familiar. They are also very proud of their wine list. Closed Sunday nights. ****

Enoteca

This different and special restaurant serves French and Spanish food and is famous for their paté, duck, sardines and iberic ham. The comsopolitan staff are friendly and they offer private meals for partys of 10 and more with a menu of your choice. Fantastic wine list with 120 to choose from, from all over the world. They also have a fine choice of cheeses. **

Taberna Valenciana

This medium sized authentic Valencian tavern 5 minutes away from the Torres de Quart, is a family run business and has been around for years. They serve hearty Valencian rices, tapas and meats. **

Popular with people from all walks of life, and just a minute away from the Calle Alta, they specialise in foods from Andalucia, Mallorca and Valencia. We recommend it. **

El Figón de la Palmoa

This little restaurant tucked away in the barrio, serves exquisite tapas and salads. On Sundays they offer home made paellas. Open every day, and on the first Saturday of every month you can enjoy a live tango show by an Argentinian duo. Located near the IVAM. **

Tapineria
This cosy restaurant has been feeding Valencianos for 25 years now and is still going strong. Spanish food with a trendy twist, but served in a traditional and relaxed atmosphere. */**

Bodegó de la Sarieta

This pretty little restaurant is just round the corner from the famous miguelete (something you have to see in Valencia) and has a fantastic reputation. Valencian cuisine and some. Everything is fresh, even their chips and everything is freshly cooked there and then. Main plates cost around 12 euros, a la carte will set you back around 25. Open mid-day and evenings. Closed Sun. **

Montalbán

Probably the most in your face restaurant in the barrio, with their large blue neon sign on the busiest street. Spanish food, great steaks, monkfish and try their bull's tail. Open every day, 13.30 to 16h and 21 to 23.30h. **

La Barbacoa del Carme

Valencia's answer to a grill restaurant, in the heart of the Barrio. The plaza del Carmen. Fresh meats and fish and salad, quite sophisticated and great value. Ask to sit outside and you'll find yourself in the actual Plaza. */**

This sometimes overly busy pizzeria, gets so busy that it is only common sense to book a table! Quite discrete so look out for it! Choose your own ingredients and they make your pizza, and have a large selection of interesting salads. Open evenings only. (One of three in Valencia. This cosy Italian has an anything Italian but pizza rule! So don't expect your typical Italian meal. Good wine list, And ironically their tapas are great too. Near Na Jordana and IVAM Open 13.30 to 16.30h and 21h onwards. **

This very loud Italian has recently been refurbished with a trendier design and been made more spacious and attracts a cosmopolitan crowd. Quality comes first here at La Dispenser, not fantastic service but the food is good and hearty Italian. Good for couples and groups. */**

An arty farty IT just off the plaza de la Reina, serves different Italian and Mediterranean food in an upmarket classy way. Not cheap, but has a large clientele and guarantees a good and satisfying meal. Open 14 to 16h and 21 to 24h. **

This authentic (bar de toda la vida) Valencian bar has been around for years and years and has a long going reputation in the barrio del carmen. Homemade good value Valencian food. Tapas, bocadillos, menu del dia and much more. *

It has to be said that this is one of the best Italians in Valencia city. One of 3 of the Vicios italianos chain, this one specialises in pizza and gorgeous antipastis. Everything is fresh, from Italy and the central market, with fun staff this is value for money and you are guaranteed a fun and fantastic meal. */**

Pizzeria Endavant

A small typical Spanish bar that serves yummy pizzas and rice dishes. They have a daily menu and also offer stews. Open every day except Sun, 9.30 to 1700h and from 20 to 24h *

Los Zopilotes

This is the only Mexican restaurant in the barrio. Owned by some crazy Mexican men that sing at you whilst you eat and decorated madly with animal patterns and booths, this restaurant serves fantastic authentic Mexican food. They also offer a few (very hot!) pasta dishes and a fab, very dangerous cocktail list, at €3 a drink! */**

La Cañameria

Fancy something different? Then look no further. La cañameria, make many of their dishes with hemp seeds and is officially a Cannabis restaurant. It has been around for a while now and attracts an open-minded cosmopolitan crowd. Lots of African dishes, like cous-cous and tabbouleh. Remember to reserve as it fills up quickly. */**

It was the first in Valencia but now there are a few.This outrageous restaurant serves international quality cuisine with drag queens on the side. They sing and perform whilst you eat fantastic food in fantastic company. Be sure to book. ***

Good little quirky restaurant with friendly staff and fun interior. All ingredients are market fresh and interesting. The lunch menu will set you back around 12 euros, and the evening menu 16 euros. **

A fun sandwich/salad bar with over 50 to choose from! One of the only places in Valencia that offers tofu, thai ingredients, humus, curry and 5 different types of bread, all for a sandwich! Great retro interior and nice staff. **

100 Montaditos
Plaza de la Reina, 10.
Probably the quickest and cheapest way to eat out with! Tiny baguettes with 100 (ironically) different fillings to choose from, for a euro each! Each tray comes with a ridiculous amount of crisps, the best part is writing your name on the order slip. The names get sillier and sillier as the night goes on. No reservations are taken so get there early as it really does get busy! *

La Xirgu

Just a minutes walk from the Calle Caballeros, the busiest street in the barrio, is this large sandwich bar. With a large selection of fillings, breads, salads and a few tapas, this place fills up so much that people stand on the streets for hours waiting for a table. Try to book, or turn up early. **

Capricho

One of the first to do it in the barrio, this idilic little takeaway bar is the perfect answer to site seeing! We love their pizza breads covered in juicy tomatoes and huge basil leaves. Their mixed salads are delicious too. *

El Rall

Rice dishes, meats and good puddings. Nice terrace so you can sit and watch the world go by. **

La Parpadella

Another of the vicios italianos successes. This italian is always busy and serves the best pasta and piadinis (griddle-cooked sandwiches) and salads. Mad staff, fantastic art pieces, all in all, a lot of fun and fab value for money. **

Orient Express

This modern restaurant is everything eastern, chinese, japanese and indonesian. Designed with long tables you share with other people and you can watch your food being cooked. No smoking, but you can join the crowds outside for a quick one. Good quality food. **

Casa Mario

A tiny restaurant on a busy road just behind the Torres de Serrano. Typical Valencian cuisine, mainly fresh fish, beautifully made and presented. Amazingly attentive staff. Try and get a table outside if you can, and watch the world go by whilst you enjoy your meal. **

Yuso

This Spanish/Valencian restaurante has been around for a while now, and is always busy and bustling. We like to order lots of tapas and pates and hams, and share. Just behind the calle serranos, its easy to find. Be sure to book. **

Corretgeria

This small and intimate restaurant has an inventive Spanish-with-a-twist menu, not cheap but value for money. Friendly but discrete service. Great place for a first date. ***

Ocho y Media

This large, two floored restaurant is set on a large square just behind the Rotunda. An inventive and interesting meal in a beautiful dining room. Well worth the money. ***

La Taberna de Marisa

Though the menu is small, all dishes come in 3 sizes, tapas, to share, or as a main course. Always busy and the staff are friendly, set in the heart of the barrio. ***

Harajuku

This chic, sleek and über trendy Japanese restaurant/lounge was the first to open in the barrio. Be sure to book as it fills up quickly. Amazing decor and traditional Japanese food. ***
